Interested in Piano Lessons?

I currently teach students of various ages and experience levels throughout the Baton Rouge area.

My desire to teach emerged during lessons with my childhood piano teacher, Ms. Michelle Parro, whose love for music was evident through her warm and caring approach to teaching.

Today, I strive to create that same encouraging and inspiring environment to instill a love for music in my own students.

Every inquiry begins with a complimentary consultation. During this time, we will get to know each other, discuss musical goals and prior experience (if applicable), and determine the lesson approach that best fits your needs.

Below are general guidelines for lesson options based on age and experience level.

Lessons for Ages 4-6

Are you interested in lessons for your young child?

Research suggests that beginning piano lessons during the early childhood range of 4-6 can support specific areas of cognitive, musical, and motor development.

Some of these skills include:

  • distinguishing small differences in phonetic sounds when learning languages (read here and here)

  • improving verbal memory (read here)

  • improving reading literacy (read here)

  • strengthening fine motor coordination

  • developing listening and auditory discrimination

Wondering if your child is ready for piano lessons?

I would be happy to discuss with you whether your child is ready to begin. Young beginners typically begin with 15-minute weekly lessons that are the perfect length to introduce a few core concepts in an engaging, age-appropriate way. Students who are 5 or 6 may be ready for 30-minute lessons.

Lessons incorporate age-appropriate tools designed for young learners.

I assign one of a variety of method books for young learners based on age and development level, including Piano Safari Friends (designed for ages 4-6) and Faber’s My First Piano Adventure (designed for ages 5-6).

I also utilize supplemental materials like Piano Prodigies, as well as plenty of games to improve rhythm and technique.

Lessons for Children 6 and up

Beginner piano lessons for children ages 6 and up are structured in weekly 30-minute lessons and combine a mix of activities and concepts to keep the student engaged.

The core of a beginner piano student’s musical journey is within a method book.

After our initial consultation, I will pick a lesson book that will align with the student’s preferences and goals, as well as the parent’s learning goals for their child.

After a certain level of knowledge, students may choose to learn more about a specific genre, like classical, pop, jazz, or hymn.

Outside of private lessons, students can receive a well-rounded musical education through participation in local festivals and competitions, as well as the studio’s yearly recital. Please see here for more information.

Lessons for Transfer Students

Whether you are looking for a new teacher after studying with another instructor or returning to piano after some time away, I welcome transfer students of all ages and experience levels.

Our initial consultation will include a discussion of your previous repertoire, method books, and current technical skills. Your first lessons will include a review of previously learned concepts to ensure that we have a clear understanding of your strengths, areas for growth, and the best path forward.

Together, we will build upon your existing foundation while continuing to develop strong technique, musical expression, and confidence at the piano.

Lessons for Adults

Adults of all ages and experience levels are welcome to take lessons! Lessons are offered in 30-minute, 45-minute, or 1-hour packages.

Lessons are available with flexible scheduling options based on each student’s goals, availability, and desired pace of study.

As a young pianist in south Louisiana, Scarlett participated in annual festivals and rallies that shaped her musical growth and provided valuable performance experience. Her many years of wins at district- and state-level competitions now allow her to confidently guide and encourage her own students through these opportunities.

As a member of the Music Teachers of Greater Baton Rouge (MTGBR), Scarlett encourages students to participate in the LFMC piano festivals held in Baton Rouge. The different types of festivals offered include piano solo, piano duet, hymn, popular, voice, and theory. These festivals allow students to perform for a judge and and receive constructive feedback in a low-stakes environment that promotes student growth. Students who receive a Superior rating earn a certificate, and students who receive three years of Superior ratings earn a trophy for their achievement.

As a member of the Baton Rouge chapter of the Music Teachers National Association (BRMTA), Scarlett also encourages students to participate in district rally events focused on scales, sight-reading, theory, and performance. Rally provides both competition-based and non-competition based tracks, so students of all experience levels can participate. Students are also welcome to participate in other competitions, listed here.

Opportunities for Student Growth

Students gain valuable performance experience in annual recitals held in May. Scarlett’s studio recently performed a recital consisting of both solo and duet performances and also received their certificates and trophies for their achievements at the LFMC piano solo and theory festivals.
